Character Models

Since the game will have multiple characters and because we don't want to over load the game with high poly items/ characters, I decided to research on how to make characters that stand out but also keep to a low amount of polys.


I decided to look at Nintendo characters, and the first thing I find is a channel that looks into the poly count of game characters, such as Mario, Donkey Kong, and Sonic.


Since the video does everything in tris, I converted them all to polys and the results were...


Mario 64 (N64): 1504 polys


Mario Sunshine (Gamecube): 2698 polys


Donkey Kong 64 (N64): 1404 polys


Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii): 8620 polys

After much debate and looking at the poly counts of all the models, I decided that as long as my character is less than 2000 polys, it would be okay to go a bit crazy with the designs.


And so, with the character modeled and completed, I was able to go under 1500 polys, minimizing the amount of polys when modeling below the hips of the character (since our game will be somewhat top down, it won't be seen).
